WHAT IS THE BEST OTC MED. FOR TAPEWORMS IN PUPS?
I have 6 week old pups who have tapeworms (yuck) and well when I 1st got them they were 1 week old and their mom had died. I notice that they both( belle-girl Tobi-boy) had flees up the ying yang but didnt think too much of it and just groomed them clean. Up until 1 week ago I notice these rice looking things in their stool. so I bought some meds @ petco for hookworms and tapeworms. Now I dont know if the meds r working cuz my pups are still getting rice looking things in there stool. But just not as much rice looking things on Belle and Tobi pooped out a really long one. IDK if one of them not showing signs of tapeworms and the other one pooping out longer ones are sings that the meds are working plz help!!!

vet treatment is a must,,these pups have already had a hard enough time,, they will be needing shots too
they should have been wormed already too…..
The first thing you should’ve done and should do is see a VET ASAP
Wait?! What?! You got them at 1wk old? Dogs CAN survive without their moms at that age, but it takes more than you to help them. They should’ve been taken to the Vet’s as soon as you got them or something.. Dogs NEED nutrients such as mothers milk. Obviously since the mother died this is irresponsible breeding. You need to bring them to the Vet for a regular exam & for this problem.
You really should have them seen by a vet.
do right by the pups and take them to the vet. they should have been to the vet long before now
Droncit otherwise known as Praziquantel generically, is probably your best bet for getting rid of tapeworms in your pets, I will point you toward another tapeworm medication: niclosamide, commercially known as Niclocide. It’s an older drug, but its efficacy at getting rid of tapeworms has been proven over the years. Both drugs are usually taken only once, and then stool samples are checked for recurring infection in 1 month intervals. Also note that tapeworm medications aren’t always 100% effective, and that preventing a tapeworm infection is always better than ingesting toxic chemicals.
That being said if you already gave them this medication and the tapeworm did go away then you really need to take them in to a vet. This could mean that the pups have a very bad parasite load and if you kill off all the tapeworms to quickly they may cause an impaction (clog) in the pups intestine. This is very serious and deadly.
Drontal is the best worm killer, it treats all types of worms in dogs. Just make sure to get the right one for their weight. The easiest way to get their weight is to weigh yourself, then weight yourself again holding the pup against your chest and standing up straight, then figure out the difference.
Unless they are not thriving you probably dont need a vet, as that can be costly. Normally Drontal requires an Rx, however I have seen several sites that offer it without one. Also they need a flea preventative as that is the typical way for pups to get worms.
I would recommend Comfortis which is a chewable that works great! The topicals are ok, i.e. frontline, however if you bathe the puppies, you have to re-treat. Since puppies make a mess, bathing often is a must, so those are a wasteof money. Also they could potentially lick each other and get sick from ingesting the topicals. If you do get Comfortis, just make sure you again get the right one for the right body weight. Do not get larger ones and split them to save money, they wont be as effective, I have tried. When I asked the manufacturer, they said this was due to the flavoring, that the medicine is not distributed evenly within the tablet.
The long worm is probably heartworm, which is more serious as it can get into the heart cavity and give the pup a heart attack. Dont bother with the dewormers you can buy in the store, they dont work. Also make sure you keep the feces picked up and clean the area with bleach every time of the pups will just keep getting re-infected.
When I have a litter of foster pups, I keep them all in an x-pen in my laundry room which has concrete floors, and I keep a mop bucket with a bleach solution by the pen so every time I pick up a mess, I mop the pen down. Bleach should be 10% bleach to 90% water.
Here is a site that you can get it without an Rx, and they ship it pretty quickly, 4-6 days to your door. It is kind of pricey, but well worth it. You will need to give one dose now and a follow up in 2 weeks. In the mean time, add a small amount of plain (non-flavored) yogurt to their food, the bacteria will help the pups absorb food while you are waiting for the meds.

FYI – This is probably a given, however I thought I would mention it, make sure anyone who handles the pups while infected washes their hands immediately after, very well, especially under the nails and do not let the pups lick your face. Worms can be passed to humans through fecal matter, generally from the puppy licking itself or (gross!) eating the feces, then licking the human on the mouth.
the fact that your puppy is 6 weeks old says enough. parasites that young, especially considering they did not receive enough maternal antibodies, can be very deadly.
please take your pups to the vet. do not buy over the counter medication. vets have payment options if money is an issue.
NEVER EVER self medicate young puppies with OTC products!!!! This can prove to be very harmful, even fatal.
Puppies should ALWAYS be treated by a vet with vet approved medications.
The trend of people self diagnosing & self medicating and using OTC products is getting way out of hand and is causing a lot of very serious issues. At the vet hospital where I work we see the results of this daily….so many pets become seriously ill or dying because someone decided to try an OTC treatment or advice on medicating online instead of seeking proper advice from a licensed vet and/or getting a hands on medical exam.
****tapeworms aren’t transferred from pets to other pets/people like other types of worms such as roundworms, hookworms…tapeworms are passed through fleas or ingesting rodents.*****
****Heartworms are only detected by blood tests, they live in the heart & bloodstream, they are not expelled in stool ******
