tapeworms in an indoor cat?
we have a 4 yr old cat and every since we have had him…he has had tapeworm. I take him to the vet and they give me the pills (2 of them, one now and one in 14 days) I treat him like they say and within a month he has them again. And he has no fleas (we use advantage on him monthly) He is strictly indoors…never outside. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please help!
we do have 2 dogs that are also treated for fleas and we have no carpet (hardwood) haven’t seen any fleas in the house or on any of my animals…and we already have our yard treated…the vet suggested these things. Still have a problem with my cat…my other cat and neither of my dogs have this problem. Just the one.
thank all of you for your answers so far…this one really has me stumped and the vet too.I have done the bombing and everything…i told the vet that I think maybe he isn’t getting them all cleared up with the meds. He had tapeworm when we got him 2 yrs ago and he STILL has it. I have had animals my entire life and never a problem like this. The vet gave him a different med this time…I hope it works.

Has your vet spoken to you about changing from advantage to revolution? This may be a solution. Revolution controls fleas and it also worm your cat with every dose. It also controls any mites that the cat may get on it. Ear mites, mange mites, etc. I really believe in it and I have used it for a long time. I have 11 cats and 1 dog. I don’t have any problems with any (bugs) for lack of a better term.
Possibly you might be bringing the fleas into the house. the fleas get onto your cat , and before the Advantage starts to kill the flea, the cat eats the flea. You might have ( don’t take this the wrong way) fleas in your home.
Do you have a dog that might be bringing in fleas? If not, you might have to treat your yard with a bug killer like dursban or liquid 7 to kill the fleas in your yard. And setting off bug bombs would insure you don’t have any in your home. They can live in carpet, furniture & cardboard boxes so you’ll need to be sure all those are taken care of. I know when we lived in Okinawa, the fleas were in the sandy soil so we had to treat the yard every 3 months to keep them away from our dog. Hope some of these ideas help.
Could be the litter tray.Try disinfecting it and use a different kitty litter. If your using a clay base one then maybe you could try a pellet based one. good luck.
That’s odd that your cat got them again..usually 1 time and their gone…with this weird weather their are more bugs and fleas now like it usually is in June,,,the fleas are outside and mite have gotten in before the advantage,,,you should flea bomb your house and with the cat flea less; then the house will be flea less,,,get 2 bombs and do 1 at a time so you can do 1 then go in the bedroom’ then 2hrs later go to the living room and do another bomb,,,do this and the fleas will be gone ,,,good luck
