Using OTC worm medication for cats?

We adopted an 18 month old cat from the SPCA about three weeks ago.

I am fairly certain they are round worms. They seem to be exiting from her anus, most usually when she is sleeping or resting. They are not very large, but they are white in color. They usually seem to "dry up." There are also, what I am assuming are eggs, too. They look like sesame seeds– same color, shape, and size.

I have been using HARTZ brand Rid-Worm Paste. I used the equivalent of 7.5 lbs. on her last Thursday, 1 lb last night (Monday), and 1 lb this afternoon (Tuesday). Although there seem to be fewer of them, they are still there. Any ideas how long until we won’t be seeing any?

Also, we have two other cats. When I gave them their full weight last Thursday, they puked everything up. They all share the same litter box. We use clay litter and do not scoop.

Just looking for how much longer we need to be giving the new one medicine, and how to avoid having them spread to the other cats, dog, & us!!
Edit: Ok, so it is definitely a tape worm. I found some great (?) pictures online just after posting here. Problem child is going into the vet today at 2:20pm– just over an hour. Have the dog’s fecal sample with me… and I am just hoping that they will give me the medication to treat the other two cats. Thanks for all your help!

thanks.. do you know any antibiotics i can buy for cystitis?
my cat was an indoor cat but since he started peeing out of his litter box, we put him outside, in a cage at night. sometimes we let him in the house. but his condition got worse after staying outside for a while and started urinating blood.. he is only turning 3 this year.. can he die for this? or will he recover?

I have a 6 month old male manx, his name is Achilles and he’s my pride and joy. He’s also a cabbit, meaning his hind legs are longer than his front legs, so he compensates by hopping on his hind legs instead of walking on them step by step. For those of you that aren’t familiar with Manx Syndrome, I’ll try to give as much information about the disease and it’s effect on Achilles.

The manx gene is extremely dominate when it comes to mating for pure-breeds, so it is actually very dangerous to mate two short-tail/no tail manxes; this is what causes Manx Syndrome. (It’s confusing to me how Achilles was even born with the disease since his mother wasn’t even a manx; only his father.) I’ve heard it’s very similar to Spina Bifida. Since Achilles is a no tail manx, he has a shortened spine and specific vertebrae in his spine can be linked to his weakened organs, especially his digestion, bowels, and bladder control. He has no problem knowing when he has to go and always makes it to the litter box, it’s only finishing his business he struggles with. I’m not sure if it’s weakened muscles that give him trouble pushing out his stools or if he can even feel anything back there, but I always find little turds near or around the litter box after he jumps out because he thinks he finished. Other than a nasty case of tapeworm that I immediately treated when he was given to me, Achilles has had no other health problems.

I took him to the vet to have him tested because his father was diagnosed with feline AIDS; fortunately, Achilles’s test came back negative. The veterinarian was very puzzled by his appearance and when I asked him if Manx Syndrome was a progressive or regressive disease, he honestly replied that my cat was the first manx he’d ever seen and knew nothing about his condition or breed.

I’m just curious to know if my little guy will be in kitty diapers in the next few years or if there’s anything I can do (i.e. other types of food, massage, or any other type of therapy) to slow the condition if it is progressive.

How long does it take Drontal to work?

On thursday my vet will be giving me the pill Drontal. I noticed that one of my cats had tape worms by the "rice" looking object on her butt fur. I have 3 cats total and have seen nothing on the other cats. I called my vet who has seen all my cats and although I KNOW what tape worms are, he suggested bringing her in for an exam anyways. Therefore thats why its gonna be Thursday. He had already mentioned that he would send her home with Drontal and also a pill for my other 2 cats. Question is, how long will this take to work? I hear about Diareah and loose stool and it concerns me because Saturday morning I am moving and my cats will be in the car all day. They will of course have their litter box but this is an 18 hour trip across 2 states. Should I wait until Sunday to administor the pills? I want them to be comfortable but also want this gotten rid of asap! They are on advantage so im still pondering how she got worms when they are all strictly indoor cats. any help is great!

Or is it just digested and you wont be able to see it in the litter box at all? I gave the dewormer to my kitty three days ago and there is nothing in the litter box but small turds, even though she has been going a lot. Is this normal? How do I know when the worm is out? (Im talking about a tape worm)
