long or short?
long is roundworms
short is tape worm segments.
Any otc wormer will kill roundworms. Tapeworms require fenbendazole 3 days in a row such as Panacur or praziquantel such as Drontal
You should get anything you give your puppy from the vet, did they tell you to bring him in? If not I’d start looking for a new vet.
Take the dog and some of his poop to the vet. The vet really needs to see it. You are uneducated and have a higher chance of making a fatal error for the dog than the vet does.
Your vet shouldn’t simply say that it "sounds like" anything – take in a fecal sample so that it can be tested for various worms. They can then prescribe appropriate wormers and get your dog onto a worming schedule. If your current vet doesn’t think this is necessary, find another vet.
Most OTC wormers are the next thing to useless when it comes to treating worms, and can be toxic if the dose is measured incorrectly – wait until you get a proper prescription one. What you describe sounds typically like tapeworm segments – but I haven’t seen your dog or his poop and I’m not a vet.
You can get dewormer over the counter, but it’s highly ineffective. Your best bet is to take a stool sample to your vet to be tested so they can properly diagnose the type of worms and give you the correct medication. Panacur and Nemex treat several types of Worms, but if he’s got Round Worms, then a few doses of Strogid will take care of it.
Definitely take your pup and a fecal sample to the vet so they can find out what worms they are for sure. A lot of puppies will have multiple types of worms, so you can only be 100% sure what he has by having a fecal checked by your vet. Depending on what they find will determine which dewormer your puppy needs.
Just FYI, tapeworms look like little grains of rice because only segments of the worm are discarded in the dogs feces, not the whole worm. Roundworms you will actually see a whole worm in the stool. Hope this helps.
If the worms are short, and look like grains of rice they’re probably tapeworms. If they’re long and thin they’re probably roundworms, It’s always possible that your puppy has both, they’re pretty common.
Only your veterinarian can make a definitive diagnosis by taking a fecal sample. Don’t buy any over the counter medications for your pup. They’re ineffective at best, and can have unwanted side effects.
Your veterinarian can give your puppy the best and most effective medication for whichever worms he has. I’d recommend that you take your pup to the vet as soon as possible so he can be treated. A few worms won’t do much harm in the short term, but untreated (especially if he has lots) can cause some very serious problems.
You can find out more about these nasty parasites at the webpage below. Best of luck
Noodles or rice?
Noodles can mean either round worms or heart worms
Rice are the segments of a tape worm. You’ll never see the entier worm in this kind.
Dog worms are mainly of two types – roundworm and thread worms. Round worms as their name goes, are round and pale pink in color.
Round worms infest in the intestines but can migrate to the stomach or are passed in stools. An infested dog’s faeces will contain millions of eggs, which may stick on to other dogs or may spread all around the area. These eggs then gain entry into a dog’s gut and subsequently hatch into worms and the cycle continues. Seen in puppies as young as 10 days, their infestation can be fatal. Route of entry is from an infested mother generally.
