my dog keeps getting worms,, is it possible the medicine just isn’t working or this is a chronic infection?
My dog is a 65+lb mutt. He is almost 1.5 years old. For at least 11 months of his life, his stool checks at the vet have been positive for worms (either giardia or hookworm) He gets a monthly heartworm pill (interceptor)
Even when his stools are negative for worms, the vet has dewormed him because of diarrhea. Ever since I got him, he was sick with diarrhea and he was anemic and lethargic. The vet didn’t know why but kept giving him antibiotics. He got better though. now it’s just almost every month his stool check is pos. for worms.
I have another dog and a cat. i have a cat litter box house so he can’t be getting in her litter. and i clean up after both dogs poop in the yard. I take him to woods trails, but for the last month the woods have been covered in ice/snow and the water frozen over.
so i don’t know where he is getting worms from, and i wonder if this might be something else?
what should i do please help? can this be a kind of chronic disease and not worms?

Okie dokie Kiddo
You need to get your dog on Heartguard Plus asap, this will prevent heartworms and hook worms, surprised your vet did not say that..and it really does,,and with the prevention of hook worms, it will cut down on the other worms, yes it does……..
It won’t stop all the other worms, but let’s put it this way, I have had all my dogs for over 20 yrs on HeartGuard Plus since they were 4 mos old, and not one of my dogs ever, have ever had any kind of worms…
The hook worm is a nasty bugger and can cause infectious worm sites in the dog to where they will keep coming back.
So, is your dog or dogs on HeartGuard Plus, get the chewables and give once a month, get from your vet, and they are beef flavored and the dogs love them…….
Now, sorry to tell you Interceptor is not a good Heart Worm med, it does not cover hook worms and wont cut back on heartworms well either…It will not hurt to switch your dog or dogs to HeartGuard Plus.
We have bunches of people in my several dog clubs that had hook worms and overall worm problems while their dogs were on the Interceptor, and they switched to HeartGuard Plus, guess what no more worms…not hook worms ever…
I know you would see the difference in your dog if you switched..
The dia is caused by the worms…your vet should know that, and even when showing negative for worms and still dia and sick, that is because he has the worms in his intestines and they are not coming out, not all worm testing will show the infectious worms.
sorry your dog is sick..hope he gets better……
The reason he has been sick since you got him, he was not properly wormed and taken care of in the past, poor baby..he was anemic due to the worms in his little system,,they have drained him of his energy and health……dogs with continued worm infestation is gonna stay sick,,,he needs different meds and on a heartworm chewable that kills and prevents hook worms…Hook worms will drain him so much, they can actually kill a dog………
I am sorry to say this to you, I think it’s time for a second opinion.
Good luck
Yes it is possible that the medicine just isn’t working. Some worm medicine is not strong enough for the amount of worms in side your dogs body. Do you know where Walmart is? By the Meridian Mall? Well, there is a pet smart there and they have great vet services!! You can talk to them all you need to about worms and they have a treatment for worms.
They have a free time for when you can walk in. There might have to sign-up for something but, its worth it. I think that the free time to walk in is 2:00-4:00 or something. But check it out!! It might help!!
