i think my dog has tape worm?

ok, so i asked a question about 30 mins ago about my dog. i found small, white, very flat mobile worms crawling in her poop. so i did research and found that it’s probably tapeworm fragments…and they say that tape worms come from fleas. but we dont hav fleas… she doesnt have fleas… and neither does the other dog. they’ve NEVER had fleas or been around another dog with fleas.
where did she get them?
dang.. come to think of it… she did pick up a dead bird last week……

They do come from fleas. Just worm her. Both fenbendazole and praziquantal kills tape worms. I am not sure if you can get the second one in canine dosage OTC. My vet prefers it over fenbendazole.
Tapeworms come from eating fleas, Or eating rodents. They can also sometimes get them from eating road kill, or other dead animals that might have been infected. My friend has 5 dogs, and 10 acres of land. The dogs roam around, and sometimes stumble upon a dead animal to eat, and they get infected with tapeworms that way. Take your dog to the vet and describe what you saw. They might also want to check a stool sample to look for any other intestinal parasites. Then they will give you a dewormer that will take care of it. Good luck with your dog!!!
**It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get your dog on some kind of flea control, like Frontline or Advantix. Even just One flea could be enough to cause tapeworms.
Does your dog ever eat cat poop? Does your dog go to dog parks or doggy daycare and play with other dogs? Does your dog lick other dogs’ butts? She could have gotten tapeworms from any of these sources (or more, I’m sure).
Make sure you take your dog to the vet. When my dog had tapeworms (and never fleas), we had to bring in a sample of his poop. The vet gave him a bone-shaped "biscuit" (antibiotics) which killed off the tapeworm. We had to bring in another poop sample a couple weeks later to make sure the tapeworm was gone. It was.

She cold have gotten them when she was around another dog that had them. Parks are a good place to pick up worms. Smelling another dog rear end or smelling another dogs poop.
From your research you know that the mother worm could be very long & have connected strands & could be quite large.
Get some wormer or take your dog to the Vet & get her wormed.
Does she catch any wild animals, mice, moles, rabbits?? They can get tapes from ingesting some of these animals that also get fleas and can get tapes from the fleas.
Your number one project should be to take her and the other dog into the Vet and get medication for the two of them to iradicate any worms. Your Vet will know what medication they should have and what dosage. Please, don’t try to save money by treating them with an off the counter medication that will supposedly get rid of everything. They don’t work.
Dogs sniff butts and crap. It’s their way of communicating and learning. Not their fault when they get parasites.

Tape worms come from the dog eating fleas.
I don’t know why you feel so sure your dog doesn’t have fleas, and that you don’t have fleas, but you are probably incorrect on that issue. They don’t get fleas from other dogs, necessarily. They can get fleas from the ground over which they walk, or from the plants they walk by, or from the rug in your home if any have gotten inside your home. If the dog eats a mouse, or squirrel, she can also get fleas that way.
Fleas eat on one dog or human, then jump off and digest their meal as they wait for their next victim.
If they get in the house, you have to bug bomb the house. If you get a bad infestion in the house, it’s best to also treat the yard with diazanon granules.
When the dog is chewing on itself, it might be chasing a flea.
Go to the pet store, or COOP, or Tractor Supply, and get a bottle of Tape Worm tablets. Treat with 1 tablet for each 10 to 15# of weight, with a maximum dose of 5 tablets for a large breed.
You probably can also see worms on the dogs rear end.

How old is your dog? If it is a pup where she got them is a easy one to answer. They get them many ways. Tapes aren’t too much to worry about. Take a stool into the vet get the medicine to worm them and they should be ok. Rather they have tapes than whips. Whips are the hardest to get rid of, once they’re in your soil they’re there for years.
Your dog definately has worms, you should call your vet right away and get some meds for that. Sometimes you need to bring in a sample but sometimes you just describe it and they will give you a perscription. Keep an eye on the other dog too though because it’s very likely he could get it being in the same house. Fleas are everywhere so it’s not impossible that she got it even though she doesn’t have fleas…it’s also possible to get them from another dog that has worms. Even just running around at a park if she sniffed or ate poo from a dog that had them. Who knows? Just get it taken care of ASAP. Oh yeah, not sure if it’s a pup, but it’s pretty typical for newborns to get worms (ringworm in particular…my new pup had both when i got her), just need to get her dewormed.
A vet sound like a good idea.
I wouldnt worry about where they came from.I would just treat it like right away and move on.I would also have your dog tested for it later down the road to make sure it doesnt come back.You will most likely never really know where it came from.Your dog could have had it as a puppy or could have just been in the wrong spott at the wrong time.At least you found it thats great.Some people dont catch it in time and it could kill a dog.
They don’t only come from fleas, they can come from inside other small animals like mice, or your dog could’ve got them by nosing around others dog’s poo e.g in the park. This is why you’re supposed to deworm your dog every three months: it’s almost impossible to keep a dog away from all the possible sources of worms.

Yup its definatly tape worms. And yes they are caused by eating fleas or dead animal that are infested. Just because you don’t see fleas on your pet doesn’t mean they don’t have a few. Even if they are on flea prevention remember that fleas do have to jump on them before they will die. Therefore a flea probably jump on them and bit them before they had the chance to die. Therefore you pet chewing at the itch ingested the flea causing tapeworms. Any dog weather on flea prevention or not can always get tapeworms. Treatment is very simpe. Take a stool sample to your vet to prove your pet has tapeworms and they will give you a few pills to give with a small meal. Remember that even after treatment you will still see the segments pass for about a week cause the dead worm still has to get out its system. If you still see them after about two weeks let your vet know and you will need a second dose.
Praziquantel can be bought otc at most larger pet stores. It does kill tape in one dose. I’ve used it on a few rescues.
