I found tape worm segments in my 6 mo. puppy’s poop. Is it important to keep him isolated?

I just found them today. I’m confident they’re tapeworm segments because he got a very minor flea infestation over christmas which we thought we got under control (he no longer has fleas on him). We have another 3 y. dog in our apartment, and we don’t want her to get infected. The puppy isn’t quite potty trained yet, so he’ll poop in the house on occasion. We’re taking him to the vet to get medication ASAP, but until then should I keep him isolated or is it fine for him to run around the apartment?

  1. No you do not need to keep them separated. The only way for a dog to get tape worms is to ingest a flea that is infected with them. So your adult dog has already been exposed to a possible infection. You have to eliminate the fleas to protect against tapeworm. Personally I would get the both of them dewormed because they were both exposed to the infected flea population.

  2. yes you do need to keep him away from any other animals because worms can transfer. Get him to the vet asap and you should be good but until then keep him away from any other animals to keep them from getting infected

  3. They should all be dewormed in this case. It is not very expensive and you don’t actually have to take your pet to the vet, just record their weights and they will give you what you need. The money you save here can pay for the other dogs treatment so you are sure to be rid of it rather than having the other dog wind up infected and then wondering if he has passed it back on to the pup again!
