I can’t get rid of these tapeworms!?
I have 4 (indoor ONLY) cats and about a month ago I noticed that they all had tapeworms! So I bought "Tape Worm Tabs" from 1-800-PetMeds.com and it worked great! But now about every week I will find a tapeworm on one of my cats. I have boughten about 4 containers of the tapeworm stuff and they go away but then come back. All of my cats are on Advantage too so this is getting so expensive. I don’t know what is wrong! I need help!

I’m NOT a fan of 1-800-petmeds… but the "Tape Worm Tabs" are the same as Droncit- both the same strength of praziquantel.
Fecal sample is best for all other intestinal prasaites- but the chances of getting a tapeworm segment in the sample are low. I trust that you know what you’re seeing. Save the segments you find in a little jar or baggie so you can have your vet analyze them. They might not be tapeworms. The Advantage will prevent new roundworm infections but stronger meds are needinf to treat an existing infection.
Clean clean clean- clean litter boxes and vacumm 2-3x daily while treating the cats- or the eggs could be lying around the house ready to infect them. Also- fleas carry tapeworms so make sure that isn’t an issue.
Make sure the cats are getting the pills- and not spitting them out. All it takes is one sneaky cat and they’ll all keep the tapeworms. Weigh each cat to get the correct dose. Treat once, then again in 2 weeks. If they’re still around after that- you’re going to need a different medication from the vet based on fecal samples. Praziquantal ONLY treats tapeworms.
Good luck
are you 100% sure they are tape worms? there are many types of worms. please describe them . i would go to the vet if it is that bad. they are killing your cats.
Bring a stool sample to the vet and in 15 mintues you will find out what parasite you are dealing with for sure.
If you are positive that it is tapeworms, then the best medicine to get for treatment is droncit. It can be done with injections or in your case with 4 cats, pills can be given.
You must also be sure to treat the entire house. This means vacuum everything, and I mean everything. There are permethrin and methoprene carpet and floor treatments that can be used to clean not only your floors, but your furniture as well. If you’re going to get rid of tapeworms, you need to disrupt their life cycle, and that begins with fleas.
Because you need to get the PRESCRIPTION kind from the vet that actually kill ALL kinds of tapeworm. (Droncit or Drontal is what we use.) Over the counter tapeworm meds only kill one species of tapeworm, and it’s not the most common type of tapeworm either. Keeping them on Advantage helps. You may need to treat the house as well, once you’ve got flea eggs in your carpet it can be hard to get rid of them. Vacuum daily, a bagless vacuum is better, and empty it outside if you can. Get under the couch, behind the drapes, etc-they like dark places. If your cats hunt, then they will continue to reinfest themselves (by swallowing the fleas that are on their prey) and you will need to deworm forever on a regular basis, anywhere from every few months to once or twice a year depending on how good they are at hunting.
Psycho-exactly the kind that DON’T work. Read the label, it only kills ONE species of tapeworm.
