Feline Tapeworms HELP!!!?
One of my three cats threw-up a tape worm while I was away for the weekend. I have an idea which one since he is the only one that goes in the garage and that is where the tapeworm is at mixed in with kitty vomit.
My question is I also have two dogs that were with me and not here at the house. Should I treat the dogs as well
I plan on treating all three cats since I am not 100% sure which one has it or they all have it. I took a flashlight and I don’t see anything around their anus. I don’t see any fleas either.
Do I need to treat my furniture, carpet…Stuff like that. Also how is it passed if my pets don’t have fleas?
Thanks for the help…
They are all UTD on shots.
Looks like from the feedback and some research it is a roundworm. I have the worm in a Ziplock bag and plan to take that to the vet. Thanks for all the great information.

Are you sure it was tapeworms and not roundworms? Cats rarely vomit tapeworms. Roundworms would be more likely. A dewormer containing pyrantel pamoate will kill roundworms. A wormer containing praziquantel will kill tapeworms. To effectively treat the worms, you need to know for sure which it was. Cats usually get a tapeworm by ingesting a flea, as you know. Flea larvae feed on tapeworm eggs. Did you use a flea comb to check for both fleas and flea dirt? Using Advantage to kill the fleas on all pets, and deworming with praziquantel should be all that is needed to treat the problem. It would be best to have your vet check a stool sample and administer the correct dewormer.
Never heard of an animal throwing up a tapeworm..they are an intestinal parasite and are usually passed through when the animal has bowel movements. However, if you really think it was a tapeworm, and no matter if it was or was not, it seems you have a problem. And yes, all animals will have to be treated is my guess. Your vet will probably want a fecal exam on your animals. In the meantime..clean each and every cat litter box. Do not let the dogs near the cat boxes and keep them away from any fecal matter if possible. But your best bet is check with vet.
When I first got my cat he had worms horribly. All I had to do was get the meds from the vet. It was gross but it did the trick. I do beleive he took two pills. The second one a week later. We didn’t treat anything else and no problems since then. GOOD LUCK!
Yeah tapeworm is in the stools. I would check with a vet to be sure you are treating correct worm. Mine threw up roundworms as a kitten and was treated easily by vet.
there are more than one kind of tapeworms and not all are infected by the flea….yes u should get everyone treated by a veterinary. some are passed by mammals, one of your cats could have eaten an infected mouse or such. treatment of household items is not needed
You’ll need to take your kitty in for stool analysis to determine which type of worm he has and get the proper treatment for him. My cats have had tapeworms and I’ve never had to clean my upholstery because of it. Ask your vet if need to treat any more of your animals when you take the cat in question.
Cats can get worms, it’s normally not a huge worry. Call up your vet and they’ll give you some deworming medicine and probably some preventative medicine as well. For our cats it was a liquid stuff so it was super easy to apply.
Time for a trip to the vet with a stool sample to determine the type of worm!
There is only ONE way to get a tape worm and that is to eat a FLEA, that has eaten a tapeworm egg.
The ONLY way for a animal, or human to get tapeworms is to ingest a flea that has ingested a tapeworm egg. There is no other way. The flea eating the egg activates the egg… which then hatches in your cat’s intestine after the cat ingests the flea. You have to eat the host (flea)… not the egg. There is NO other way to get tapeworms. So make sure you treat all your animals for fleas as well.
Tapeworms however, are not usually vomited. Roundworms are often vonited though!
You will need a wormer from your vet to kill the tapeworms. I recommend Drontal.
Do NOT use OTC wormers. They are not safe and can kill your cat. Not to mention they don’t work very well. Wormer is a pesticide so don’t be cheap when buying it. Do what is safe and buy from your vet.
Yes I thought it would be a roundworm – they are usually thrown up, whereas tapeworms usually present as segments round the anus.
Tapeworms are not only passed from fleas. They can be caught from sniffing around the poo of infected animals, or eating carrion like mice that are infected. Same goes for most intestinal worms.
You need to get worming treatment from the vets – for all of your animals. You don’t actually need to show them the worm, they can give you a tablet that covers all kinds of intestinal worms and more – knowing the actual type of worm is not going to affect the type of wormer given.
