Certain types of tapeworms are contracted when a flea is eaten. Your dog/cat may ingest a flea when grooming. The likelihood of you eating a flea is pretty low. There are other worms that you can "catch" from contact with an animal that is passing infective eggs in the feces: round worms and hook worms…toxoplasmosis with cats.
Yes they can get tapeworms from fleas:

Why give your pets away? Treat them and your home for fleas. Frontline plus or a similar product from your vet (not over-the-counter flea meds) will get rid of the problem.
My dog had a flea when she was a puppy, then later she had thrown up tape-worms and there was tapeworms coming out of her behind! i didnt no what it was at first and i was scared when i first discovered she had them! So yeah, they could have a tapeworm from fleas.
