can drontal tape worm medicine for cats kill them??
my cat was very healthy… i took her to the vet and got all her shots and medicine for tape worms (drontal) they gave her 3lbs over her limit… i gave her the pills and 10 hours later she dropped over dead… no bleeding, no choking, no vomiting it was like her heart just stopped and she dropped dead… she had no health problems and all the vet said was im sorry…. they denied all accusations of it being the drontal.. they said i could have given her 10 pills and she would not have died.. i think the vet is full of s*>+

I have seen people give at LEAST 5 times the dose they should have given with NO side effects. Really. Not to mention all the people that have given at least 1/2 to 1 extra pill….thinking that if one is good, two is better!!!!!
It is a very safe drug and I have never seen side effects from it, much less death.
You could have a necropsy done to prove cause of death.
I suppose it is possible to have an deadly allergic reaction to any medication, but thtye would have had no way of knowing that before giving it.
Necropsy would give you some idea!!
Yes, it is possible.
She could have had an allergic reaction to pills, also giving OVER the dosage for a 3 lb. heavier cat is quite a bit.
Understand, Drontal is enough med. to kill the tapeworms, but if given correctly NOT (should not be) enough to kill the cat.
[also the combination too, of shots and the de-wormer is alot on some kitty's system at once].
I’m so sorry for your loss, but if in doubt an independent investigation and autopsy on cat should be given, but costly (although would answer your question and hopefully lessen your guilt).
Again, sorry for you and kitty.
Gd. luck.
The drontal website I found said that the side effects of an overdose would be vomiting, salivation, lose of appetite, and diarrhea. Call another vet and see what they say. If it was my cat I would wonder if she did not have a reaction to one of the shots that was given. Did you vet give you any reason they felt she died? I am so sorry about your kitty.
As far as I know, Drontal is a very safe tapeworm medicine. It sounds like your cat received several shots as well. My guess is that it is more likely some sort of reaction to the other shots.
Typically, it appears that most animals who have an adverse reaction to the Drontal exhibit other symptoms, such as vomiting. I’m sure an adverse reaction to the Drontal is possible, but my guess is it was something else.
In any case, there is no way your vet could have known your cat was going to have a reaction, if that’s what happened.
My sympathies to you and your cat.
Our cat shelter, uses drontal as our main worm killer for all our cats and I have yet to see any side-affects with it.
With all medications, it is possible to over-dose but with this one, it’s rather rare.
Perhaps she had a heart problem that you or your vet did not know about. Those things can pop up fast and without warning.
Again, that’s all I can think of. And again, sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is to loose a cat and it might be the vet’s fault.
