Because i feed ALPO thats all i can afford because the rest of my money goes for neutering and shots and vet check ups and microchipping. and heart worm medicine and other needs for the dogs crates/leashes/collars/training sessions.

No you are not a horrible dog owner..and dog food is dog food ALPO is just fine for your dogs to eat..people just say it’s bad cuz they want you to pay more for the other dog food..
I recall you talking about feeding your dog RAW before..so I don’t buy your "Alpo" story…you just want to stir things up
no, your not horrible. you do the best you can with what you’ve got. i also had a wolf, but she was pure wolf and her son was have german shepard. hugs to you for the great care your giving them. and give your wolf/husky a great big hug for me.
No, your not a horrible dog owner. It sounds like your getting all of the big expenses out of the way. Besides, expensive doesn’t always mean better. Kibbles and Bits isn’t very expensive and is a good dog food. Besides, many of the expenses you named are once in a lifetime, or once a year at most. Once you get them out of the way the first time, you can start buying better food.
If you have to ask…….
Well it is not a food I would feed my dogs but at least you are feeding him/her. Maybe after all of the vet bill are done and over you will be able to feed something that cost a little more. Good Luck tho
Your not horrible at least you are not feeding your table scrapes, just get your dogs on a different food when you can afford to something that is more nutritional for them, and helps with there coats. (Nutro, Eukanuba, Science Diet..) Stuff that you CANNOT get from Target Wal-Mart or any grocery store. And make sure whichever food you choose does not contain animal by products.
ur not a terrible pet owner. dont beat urself up because someone says that ALPO is a terrible dog food. once the check ups, neutering, etc. r done use the extra money u hopefully hav to buy better pet food. ur not a bad owner because if u were u wouldn’t feed it at all or u would not hav bought all those things that help keep ur pet safe. so tell that person that u r doing the best u can and that u hav to give ur dogs everthing they need to stay safe.
hOW DID YOU GET HEART WORM? YOU are horrible dog owner. that means you don’t care about your dog.
Yes, feeding your dog Alpo is, in my opinion, neglect. There are not enough nutrients in Alpo- my vet as seen more than 1 dog who has died because of eating Alpo. I know it’s harsh, but I really feel that if you can’t afford to take care of your dogs, then you shouldn’t own them. A dog is a big responsibility, not one to be taken lightly.
well im assuming ur talking about the ALPO dog food, but as long as your feeding your dogs and getting thier shots and stuff, i think your good. just make sure you feed them 2-3 times a day and feed them enough because you have big dogs and they need a lot of food, just not too much. I dont think your a horrible dog owner becuase at least you give them shelter, shots, and all that good healthy stuff, and at least your feeding them. You’re probably one of the better pet owners that accually loves thier dogs
goodluck?peace
I dont think your a terrible owner. Alpo is not that good, but if thats what you can afford right now. You may want to try Canedae, not that expensive and much better.
Cheap dog food is not cheap.
Your dog will need less food and be ill less if you provide a good quality diet.
Have you never head of the saying you are what you eat?
While this applies to your dog as well…
my advice, if your dogs can take it go back to raw. it doesn’t have to be expensive, buy things on sale and freeze them. all you really need is chickens, beef (or some other red meat), eggs, and organs (which are cheap)
i doesn’t make you a horrible dog owner to feed bad food, but in the end you might end up paying dearly for it(health problems, shorter life etc)
Question for LOLA
why in the world would i want someone else to pay more for dog food? that makes no sense. I don’t make the dog food, i don’t work for the company, i have no vested interest in any of the dog food companies, all i actually care about is dog health in general.
I have no idea what Alpo is as i don’t live in the States.
If this food was so so so bad it wouldn’t be on the shelves to buy..
Also when you have finished with the crate buying etc you will have more cash to buy a better food.
At least your feeding your dogs and also taking them to training classes…
You’re not a horrible dog owner !!!! Why would you think that ??? Anyway "Alpo" has been around for a long time, and dogs like it.
i am not here to pass judgement on anyone. I will give you a word of caution though, just feeding Alpo can lead to tooth decay unless you also brush their teeth. You may end up having to spend big $ later for teeth cleaning at the vet. Also, without proper nutrition dogs can develop health problems, shortening their lives.
There are some brands that aren’t much more expensive, but that are a little more nutrious. Feeding your dogs Alpo can be compared to a human eating only McDonalds every day. That food just doesn’t supply pets with the nutrition they need. And with a better quality food, you actually have to feed them a little less, so that also makes it more affordable. Petco also has a deal where every 10 bags of dog food you buy you get a free bag. That and coupons could make a better quality food more affordable for you. Iams, though not the best, offers a better quality food than Alpo and they have lots of coupons available. Their kibble is carried by grocery stores as well as Petco and the price at the gorcery stores is reasonable. Try shopping around, you may find you can afford something else. And later, if your finances improve you can switch to an even better grade of food like Nutro, Canidae, Wellness or Wysong. (Also, you can email any pet food company and ask them to mail you some coupons…just tell them you are considering switching to their product, and you will be amazed at how quick the coupons will arrive!)
Are you a bad pet owner? Let’s see, you said you neuter your pets, get them to the veterinarian regularly, make sure they are trained, micro-chipped and on heartworm preventive…sounds like you love your pets and you are doing the best you can for them. (actually, you are doing quite a bit more than a lot of people I know…) So, no I would not call you a bad pet owner for the brand of food you can afford to feed your pets.
No but if you could somehow get better food you should b/c it will lower your vet bills. You could try authority they sell it at petsmart I dont know about your income buts its acctually priced cheap or you could try canidae Ive heard its good quality and about 30-35 dollars for a 40 lb bag.

no i wouldn’t say that you are a horrible dog owner. you seemed to have taken care of a lot of the other things responsibly. however, if you knew that money would be an issue, you shouldn’t have got 2 large dogs that require a lot of food..i only have a med size dog but feed him a high quality kibble combined with raw, and i spend about $50 a week on his food, so i know it would be really expensive to feed 2 large dogs properly. what they eat is important, even you dont notice any immediate negative effects. its like if you eat junk food all the time..its cheap, but not good for your health. you knew the financial obligations that would be involved, and should have planned accordingly. but i’d call that slightly irresponsible, but not a horrible dog owner since you are taking good care otherwise.
Alpo may not be the best food for your dogs, but it is probably better than table scraps. Keep in mind that in some parts of the world dogs are lucky to get a slice of bread for dinner.
For your dogs’ sake and your peace of mind, educate yourself about pet nutrition – for free. Visit your local library and borrow a few books on the subject. One particularly useful book is Dr. Pitcairn’s Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard H. Pitcairn and Susan Hubble Pitcairn. You don’t have to follow it word by word, just get the idea of stepping outside the box, or I should say the can, of commercial dog foods.
You can experiment and check out if your puppies like apples, banana, melons, but for goodness sake, do not feed them grapes or raisins. They are toxic to dogs. You can ask the vet or do a google search for what foods are toxic to dogs. The link below should be helpful.
One more thing. When you decide to switch to a new diet, do it gradually over a week period, so they have time to adjust. Good luck!
no, I dont think ur a bad dgo owner. you are making sure ur pet is healthy by taking it to the vet. alpo is not a bad food. ur doing fine, dont worry about those people. i have a dog too and i know how expensive the vet can be
You aren’t a horrible pet owner. You are taking care of your dog in the best way you possibly can. You’ve neutered your dog … which is a major plus and do all the check ups and shots and training.
When we were young, we fed our dogs Purina dog chow. That’s all we knew and it was good enough. We took our dogs to the vet when we needed to and kept them in a dog house with plenty of water and feed them regularly.
We ran and played with them … what’s wrong with that?
We feed ours Science Diet because that’s what our Vet recommended. I don’t know if that’s cheap or not but it’s not a designer food and it’s not home made either. It’s something that our Veterinary Doctor (that went to school and got a degree in) recommended, and if our Vet recommended it, it’s what we’re feeding our Pugs.
If you want to feed your dog Alpo, then feed it Alpo and just love and play with your dog … feed it and water it … take it to the vet when you need to … make sure it has a dog house … take it on walks … love it … what else does the dog really need? (I have been told the cheaper the dog food is the more poop it makes – but if you keep that picked up and cleaned … just make sure he’s well fed)
Sounds like you’re doing fine ….
Alpo is a good dog food in my opinion. I feed mine OlRoy most of the time. There is nothing wrong with that. At least you take them to the vet for shots and spay and neuter. And you feed them.
